Could you depict a self-portrait ?

I'm a 44 year old former aircraft mechanic, I started making knives as a hobby in 1994. After being laid-off last year, i desided to make knives full-time. My hobbies are rock climbing and water skiing (and other water sports).

How have you come to balisong, and why do you like this kind of knife?

Until this year i knew very little about balisongs, after seeing some custom bali's on-line late last year i started getting interested. I Feb. 2006 at the Las Vegas show I met Abe (from EDC knives) and some USN members who encouragd me to try making bali's, so i made my 1st bali in March of 2006 and i was hooked.

Is balisong a knife which permits you to artistically express yourself ? Does it better than for another folder ?

Right now i feel a little bit limited with bali's, but i can see in the future as i get more familiar with the geometry of the bali. Also, most of the balis that i'm ask to make are meant to be used or fipped and i'm not able to use some of my favorite materials like mother of pearl or ivory, also highly polished handles are not desirable on a EDC bali.

Do you work mainly for specific orders, or do you create according to your feeling without asking you if the knife will be easy to sell ?

Right now it's about 50/50.

Do you use CNC machine or do you work exclusively manually ? What do you think the CNC machine brings ?

I do not own or use a CNC mill or lathe, i do use a manual mini mill and mini lathe for some operations.

Do you EDC a balisong ?

Not yet but soon i will.

Do you flip balisongs ?

Only enough to test the bali's i make. I hope to find the time to make a trainer and learn more.

How could you describe your creations ?

Very basic.

Could you give some advice to amateur or professional knifemakers who wants to start making balisongs ?

Talk to the people who use and flip them.

How do you think that the world of balisong will evolve in the future ?

I think there is a good possibiity that the bali will make a comeback and possibly turn around it's bad reputation.

Thank you Les for taking the time to answer our questions. A last word before you leave ?

I'd just like to say the I really appreciate all of the help and input i've recieved from other bali maker and bali collectors, I thought bali's would be easy to make but it turns out that is more to them than meets the eye.
